Depends on what you want:
- Fighters are the best warriors in the game (in general and specialized)
- Barbarians are well what the title says barbarians: they posses a greater amount of hitpoints and have the all powerfull rage ability. They lack the refinement of fight a Fighter does however.
- Paladins are knights of god, they are capable warriors, but their greatest strength comes from other abilities not from excellent fighting capabilities.
- Rangers are woodsmen with an enorms knowledge of survival and nature, combined with some very focused fighting styles they come close to matching a fighters finess but not quite, rangers also have fewer hit points.
(only the paladin and the ranger gain a few magical abilities later on)
combining both magic and combat is very hard in dnd.
