Here it goes. We are on our way to settling the issue of gay marriage, and therefore equality under the law for gays, before the United States Supreme Court. The Massachusetts justices were exactly right when they cited, "no rational reason" for oppostition to gay marriage. The opposition that exists is based solely on ignorance or willful bigotry against gay people, it is as simple as that. People can disagree with it, but that does not warrant them being able to use the mob mentality of majority rule against gays to keep them second class citizens and denying them their individual, self-evident rights to the pursuit of happiness, equality under law, and to be free of taxation without representation.

Let me explain.

In the end gay marriage will be. How can individuals who pay to support the civil institution of marriage (and that is what is at issue here, not the separate religious sacrament) with their taxes as gays currently are, and then be expected to be barred from participating in the institution?

Separate but equal? Sorry, won't happen, and it shouldn't. In his State of the Union address, President Bush said he wants marriage to remain as it is, between a man and woman, while he also says that gay people have integrity and value. The president can't have it both ways. If all people, including gays, have value and integrity then their individual rights must be respected and that includes their right to take part in the civil institution of marriage which their taxes support. If this individual right to be free of taxation without representation is not respected and gays must still fund, through their taxes, the civil institution of marriage while being barred from participating in it, it is a blatant and clear miscarriage of justice.

Moreover, there is no warrant for a Constitutional amendment either. For such a thing to be needed gay marriage would have to be mandatory. Since it is not and people have choice not to be part of a gay marriage there is no need for an amendment since no one's rights and freedoms are violated.

Also, the child-rearing argument won't work against gay marriage either. Why? Easy, straights can get married yet not have children. If marriage is for child-rearing then we ought to start annulling all those immoral childless marriages, right?

Lastly, when social conservatives try to frame this whole issue as a Leftist assault on America, I'd like them to know that in fact it is a libertarian matter that involves the defense of individual rights. Unfortunately they won't understand that because the day of Conservatism being about such things as personal freedom and choice has long since vanished and perhaps died with Barry Goldwater. In our current era limited government Conservatism has been supplanted by catering to a religious minority that may act like, but does not represent, the totality of its creed.
