I know for me, it's for comfort, and not physical comfort. It's like, well, like losing a close friend, and having those cute little patterns, makes the parting a little less sorrowful. I KNOW that my close friend is going to a better place, and having fancy patterned paper to travel on, well, that gives me peace of mind.
