i figured he shut the door to protect Desmond from the grenade blast... but of course he could of gotten out and shut the door

but Charlie had to die... Desmond was gonna keep having more and more flashes of Charlie dying, so it would have gotten old after awhile, Desmond has to have more purposes than just having flashes of charlie dying

People are forgetting that the glimpse that Desmond had was that he would see the blinking switch, hit it and then drown, but nonbody remembers that after that, Desmond then sees Claire and baby get into an helicopter.

That's why he closed the door because he thought that he was going to ruin the ending of the glimpse. That's my take on him basically sacrificing himself.

It was pretty neat that it wasnt the protypical light that we all thought it was.
