Ahh!!! A saber's blade is not a bloody laser!!!
If you were to stick a lightsaber into the ground, it would probably sit there with the blade in the ground and the handle above ground until the ground around it got so hot that the handle melted. Then you'll have destroyed your lightsaber, good job!!!
And about the whole Obi-Wan's saber having shut off when he died but Vader's still being on when he's not holding it...each lightsaber was hand-built by it's user/own, so maybe Obi-Wan built his where it would shut off if no one was holding it, while Vader built his so that it could remain on even if it's not being held.
