I'm a John Williams freak, and I could not resist these musical "spoilers". Here is my partial thematic analysis (the first and last tracks):
Track 1: The opening of the movie with the opening crawl, leading strait into the adventurous opening sequence of the movie proper (a huge space battle). So of course the same bold rendition of the main Star Wars theme (Luke's theme) that opens all Star Wars episodes, and then original adventure music (with a couple intentional nods to previous Star Wars music here and there)
Track 15: The very end of the movie and the closing credits. Within a few notes it quickly goes into brief, soft and renditions of Princess Leia's theme and then Luke's theme (think cute little babies), and then Obi-Wan's theme (Old Rebublic/Force theme) reminiscent of the binary sunset scene in the original Star Wars where Luke yearns for the future, the horizon.
Then it goes strait into that bold main theme that starts off the credits in every episode. Then we get to hear the Luke and Leia theme for the first time in a Star Wars film since Jedi. Then it goes into what can only be the new epic main theme of Revenge, "The Battle of Heroes". It heavily uses the choral element very effectively like "Duel of the Fates" from Menace, and part of it works in a haunting rendition of the Force theme. Then the track goes into the grand Throne Room music from the end of A New Hope proper (which uses Rebel Fanfare, Obi-Wan's theme, Luke's theme, Leia's theme). Then it brings it all back to the bold powerful main theme as portrayed at the end of A New Hope's end credits. Rock!
I am so freaking excited to see this movie, and I am definitely not disappointed by the music I've heard. Of course I had no doubts that John Williams would be able to create yet another musical masterpiece. John Williams is a genius who can rightfully take a large part of the credit for the impact of Star Wars. The original Star Wars soundtrack alone is responsible for the current trend in making thematic musical material for movies, and it's all thanks to the masterminds of George Lucas and John Williams.
And the DVD looks awesome! Can't wait!
