Poll: Widescreen vs. Fullscreen

That happens often. Some films are shot on Super35 stock with a 1.33:1 (full-screen) aspect ratio while keeping in mind that the film will be matted when projected. They're matted (bars are added) for theatrical distribution and for home video release you either get one or the other, or both, depending on the director's (studio's, in most cases) preference. This goes for many films that eventually live up the majority of their lives on television/cable.

I will say it again:

At the beginning of the FULLSCREEN version, the movie CLEARLY states that this FULLSCREEN version with this quote: "The following film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen." THIS MEANS THAT THIS FILM WAS NOT SHOT IN 4:3 (OR 1.33:1)!!!

Not true. All this means is that it is a modified version of the original. It is modified to fit a 4:3 TV screen. It has nothing to do with how it was shot.

If there are two versions out there it is pretty obvious that the intended vision is the widescreen version...

Widescreen films are made fullscreen to fit tv screens. It would make no sense for a fullscreen film to be reformatted to fit a widescreen tv as this would most likely result in the tops of people heads being cut off in closeups.

The last three movies on this page are examples of widescreen films modified by means of extension to fit 4:3 (fullscreen) TVs:

Yes, I will agree that there are plenty of movies where Widescreen is indeed the better choice. But not for the movie "The Order (with Heath Ledger)". At least 15% of the film is lost in the Widescreen version. I used photoshop so as to GRAPHICALLY give this comparison an easy to see problem with some widescreen formats:

Yeah, I see your point. Though I think the filmmaker made a wise choice here...

In the widescreen version, like you said, the cup is cut out. But the only way to include the cup in the WS shot would be to sacrifice the top of the actors head, which is not a great thing to do. The fullscreen version allowed the cup to be seen while keeping heath's head. With what the filmmaker had to work with, it was probably the best decision to cut the cup.

Anyway, this is getting offtopic - this is a Star Wars forum. 😄

The Order with Keith Ledger

Anyway it is good to know that when I get ready to buy Star Wars on DVD, that I can rest assured that I will absolutely want the Widescreen version.

Whether or not my semantics are exactly correct or not, I know for a fact that there are some movies that I prefer to be in Fullscreen and some Widescreen and some, like Babylon 5 to be in BOTH!!!

Just as I know for a fact that Orgone energy is indeed real in which I have used my visual ray to disipate clouds hundreds of times in what is known as "Visual Ray Cloudbusting". Including I know for a fact that my Ultra Cloudbuster attracted a high orbit UFO/Plasmoid last year when a star suddenly started to move and grow to a third the visual size of the moon and then back to a star and continued to move past a tree obstruction and then slowly grew back and then grew small and vanished at 10:30 at night when it aligned itself perfectly to my prototype. Even though Wilhelm Reich and his teacher Sigmund Freud are unqualified supposed scientific researchers, Life Force Energy (aka Tachyons, Ch'i, Ki, Prana, Orgone, Superlight, Vril, Animal Magnetism, etc.) (May the force be with you) does indeed exist on an extemely small wavelength that is the size of Strings in Superstring Theory and M-Theory in which Electromagnetic fields are a polar opposite....But I digress. Point is this: HERE I HAVE GIVEN AN EXTREMELY CLEAR EXAMPLE OF WHAT I AM COMPLAINING ABOUT WITH SOME WIDESCREEN DVD VERSIONS OF "SOME" MOVIES, AND LOW AND BEHOLD A COUPLE OF PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT. Once I have tested my prototype of a working Ultra Joe Cell (Orgone Water Fueled Catalyst Implosion Retrofited Vehicle Engine) as something both PRAGMATIC AND EMPIRICAL, there will always be those who think that the earth is still Flat and go ahead and argue stupid semantics. (Like the "Joe Cell", I intend to make the "Ultra Joe Cell" public domain worldwide with an UNCORPORATION network marketing plan owned by the people and for the people. Just install a free 30 day trial period to run a vehicle on water and collect money after the month is over. Simply pragmatical and empirical outreaching to the public.)

Sincerely,

Vholïk Krokït

I hadn't read your posting when I digressed above and got way off topic (EXCEPT THAT IN A ROUND ABOUT WAY THAT "MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU" IS ACTUALLY SOMETHING REAL THAT CANNOT BE MEASURED DIRECTLY SINCE SCIENTISTS CANNOT BUILD AN ANTENNA SMALLER THAN THE SIZE OF A QUARK, LET ALONE AN ATOM, IN ORDER TO PROVE ITS EXISTSENCE).

Have a goodnight / great day, as I am signing off for now.

Quit spamming intensively.

I hate having that fiddley stripe of a picture on the TV. If I had enough dosh to buy a widescreen tv then widescreen otherwise fullscreen is my chosen thing.
