this tradition is older than most of you guys. it's a part of our culture, first and foremost. secondly, like a lot of you have stated, these people are not forced to do this. this is part of our lenten season that during good friday, NOT easter sunday, my people "repent" for their sins by trying to re-enacting the christ's passion. they do it, not to themselves, but for themselves. it is an assurance to our catholic belief.
