The Main Sources Of Law In Australia

There are three main sources of law in Australia. These are Aboriginal Customary Law, Contemporary Australian Law and International Law.

The Aboriginal legal system was well developed and understood throughout Aboriginal Society.
The system of law was customary and unwritten.
Following is an outline of the important legal aspects concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customary and unwritten law.

Spiritual Nature of Customary Law: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customary laws are those rules of society and family which indigenous people developed over the tens of thousands of years of there occupancy of Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s lives were entwined with nature and the use of the land, because they had no need for industrial development as the land supplied them with all they needed.
