The only reason for my couch to ever be anywhere its not supposed to be, is to be able to watch tv at an angle with less glare.

good interior design does have a profound psychological effect in that it makes one happier with their environment...but the belief that interior design can alter one's destiny is just retarded. just one more thing for gullible rich dummies to piss their money away on...........come to think of it..........maybe i should learn feng shui$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

On top of that, there are actually people who do this for a living. They are hired by some poor sap, go into their house, and "feel" the vibes in that house, and move furniture accordingly. This costs the customer thousands of dollars.
That sounds utterly stupid and laughable. Sounds like something outta of an IKEA commercial.
A lot of Feng Shui is superstition, and most practicioners nowadays are just out to make a buck. But it does have its origins in the I Ching (the Book of Change) which is a highly respected and much studied work of Chinese philosophy. Feng Shui is a very deep rooted cultural phenomenon which today has become little more than a tongue in cheek feel-good thing for most Chinese people. Some Westerners have adopted it because it's exotic.
The I Ching is the primary text of Taoist thought which has a history going back 5 centuries before the birth of Christ. It's not strictly a religion, just as Buddhism isn't, but a philosophy of living in harmony with the world. Like Platonic philosophy, it attempts to prescribe behavior from how to live mundane everyday life, to managing the entire state.
There are elements of mysticism, art, mathematics, philosophy, psychology and superstition all rolled into one body of work, which is why it has been the subject of study even to this day.
Feng Shui, literally translated Wind Water, can more accurately be described as a methodology of choosing living conditions which are harmonious with you as a person, your surroundings, and your life situation. I call it a methodology, and not a science because a lot of it is based on conjecture or subjective belief that certain mathematical patterns actually reveal the universe's secrets. A lot of it is based on trial and error, seeing providence in coincidence, simply because coincidence recurs.
