monthly xmen comic review

apologies for the double post...

I've only had the pleasure of reading a few Exiles issues, but 62, 63 and 64 are great comics...

its sweet when beak turns up with the alternate hyperions...

btw... i thought mimic had the powers of the original 5 x-men, yet he has bone claws and organic steel skin, how is that?

I, for once, actually thought Scott and Emma looked appropriate for one another. btw, what is Exiles about exactly?? I read a volume at barnes and noble about them fighting the Fantastic 4 and that Aqua chick getting imprisoned by them....

Did I post this in here? I don't know, but here's my review of number 2.

House of M #2
A Review by MunkiesArUs

Well it’s finally out, the second issue of this summer’s biggest comic book event: House of M. My review of issue one was incredibly bias now that I look back upon it, but I still liked that issue better than this one. After a delay in buying this one, I was really excited with it in my arms, but now I feel like they cheated me of my money. It’s a good issue, but maybe it’s just me. A lot more things ticked me in this issue than issue one, and Olivier Coipel’s art is showing what it really is, not the hazed, outstanding vision I originally saw it as. Well, read on for the goods and bads of this issue. Spoilers galore.

The cover is a little annoying. I mean, it’s that lame watercolor thing again, and it’s going to be that for the ENTIRE series’ covers. It makes me mad, there’s so many talented artists out there that can pencil and then have it inked and all that. So there is only one recognizable person on the cover this time, WOLVERINE. Surprise, surprise. It’s nice to see lots of people flying in the background, but the majority of the people look very grim. Not unlike the end of New X-Men, where Magneto is marching the homo-sapiens of New York to the camps or whatever he devised.

Of course, one can’t help but think “Hey, that dude with the yellow visor MUST be Cyclops” and “The chick with white hair in front of him, that’s Emma ‘fo sho’!” but it’s not, which is disappointing. It’s only Wolverine you’re supposed to know. About the art in the issue, Olivier did something I didn’t notice in issue one: he adds these little triangles on people’s noses and they look hideous. Faces follow ONE obvious template and puff out a bit then they should, but otherwise I liked the art.

Emma, however, looked TERRIBLE. I’m sorry to say. Ol’ Steve Rogers was cute, and the mutie kids playing outside was even MORE adorable. I’m simply pyscho about it. The thing with the mutants is, these aren’t canon guys. Olivier can draw basically whatever he wants, and I think that makes this issue so much more fun, just to see the little powers he draws. Kitty’s class in Ohio is simply cute, too. There’s a little wolf boy, some metallic boy [not Piotr], a freaky girl with purple eyes and some energy eminating from them, and all this cut stuff. Kitty looks nice…a good change from the ugly enhanced Larroca’s art and the just plain ugly Cassaday’s art.

The front page, the recap one, it’s just lifted from last issue. Gosh. You couldn’t have drawn something cool and new? I mean, obviously the majority read the last issue and they’d recognize it. Marvel is being STUPID for some odd reason. That one picture of Emma where she yanks at Scott’s tie, she looks EXACTLY like that picture of Jean drawn by that Maduereira guy. Maybe…nah. I was gonna say Scott wants Jean’s mind with Emma’s body, but that Uncanny issue showed us that a fat Emma was equally loved by Scott, and it was EVERYTHING about her he loved. How sweet. Isn’t that funny Scott wants Emma deep down inside?

Dazzler appearing as a host is brilliant, though her singer persona would be cooler. Again, a funky mutant audience for her talk show. Olivier captured the way a celebrity sits on a couch perfectly, and though it sounds stupid, I really like it. Warbird’s page is hot. I really like it. Okay, anybody else notice Remy is a terrible thief in House of M? You think he’s always wanted to be a really bad, low thief like we see here? I find that hard to believe. It makes me sad inside.

The giant Sentinel head? Cool. “The mutant blood lost here was the last that will ever be lost in war.” Nice. And that’s Bishop, the black cop! See the M on his eye? Nice cameo. This is in Los Angeles, remember, the notice didn’t change from Dazzler’s show. I hate the next two scenes. Well not hate, just extremely dislike. I guess the Luke Cage one is supposed to portray the incredible disgust for humans the world has grown. Pre House of M, the phrase was “flatscan”. Now, it’s “sapien”, which is think is so much more sophisticated AND insulting at the same time. I like, Bendis.

The Hell’s Kitchen scene, however, bored me. I got really scared the black woman was Storm. And then a white haired black woman popped up, too. I got REAL scared. Storm as a background lackey for Luke Cage? Dayam, Magneto. Luckily, Storm appears later. I’m loving Strange’s new moustache. Awesome. And being a psychologist, that’s so much cooler, too. I first though Robert was Iceman, and then realized it’s probably The Sentry. I’ve got no clue whatsoever about the New Avengers, so excuse me.

Russia. Is that a train wreck? A rocket crashing into Earth from Krypton? A giant sand monster chasing a man? No, it’s Colossus, dragging a ginormous plow across his field. Amazing. I really liked this. Stark’s Labs was another annoying scene, simply showing off the mutant supremacy and also hinting at Pym’s project, which will NO DOUBT be something to remember in future issues.

Okay, Storm’s scene. I like her look, a little too much exaggeration on the body, but it works. Janet’s haircut, oh god, it’s sooooo designer-ish. I like it a lot, a cute little throw in. Also, what the hell does this mean? I totally beat me. “Do you know what the House of Magnus will be wearing?” I’m assuming the entire house will be wearing a uniformed design. I’m sure Magneto brought back Magda and Anya, but does anyone think maybe he’s married to Storm? Janet says, referring to the gown, “It accentuates the royal family’s event without making too much of a statement.” I don’t get it!
Logan scene is NICE. For once I don’t mind him being behind it, main character. At least not how this first page unravels. “Morning, James.” OH MY GOD, SHE’S BACK. Fricken Mystique. Redhead fetish, hahaha, I think that’s brilliant. He walks out, and I thought it was Monet but apparently its Spider-Woman and Toad, who calls Logan “Sir”. That’s cool…I’m seeing Logan as some general for the Army of M. 😛. That last shot of the fleet is cool. Especially with the M flag everywhere.

So, all in all, it’s rather a step down from the first issue because I didn’t like too many of the scenes. One should enjoy all of a comic book. Well, whatever. It was fairly okay, now that I’ve read it calmly, without the hyperventilation. Overall grade? Seven out of ten, mostly because I didn’t like scenes. The writing was okay, but I think I’m going to have to buy the Pulse and all those little Behind the Scene things because I’ve got a feeling we aren’t going to find out everything about this anytime soon.

I wonder what issue three’s “going to crack the internet in half!” last page is.

munkie that issue didnt deserve that much typing...

No, its bullshit... bloody phoenix... and besides... that could be emma's fantasy, not scott's...

Well I might have scored it too high, but considering the God awful mess Uncanny was anything was good.

uncanny is a shambles nowadays... it used to be one of the best comics in all of marvel...

I agree.Imo,the last decent issue they had was when X23 fought Wolverine. Then they went back to the Savage land and it just went to complete hell from their.Even though I like Pyslocke, her return compared to Collusus' was just ridiculous.

Yeah, at least colossus had a reason...

explain the conditions under which Psylocke returned

The X men got a call that some group had one of their own.It was Psylocke. She had no reason why she was back.

maybe she was too sexy to stay dead

Possibility.LOL!!!!!!!

I would lose it if that was Claremonts conclusion to her return.

I'm assuming she wasn't really dead..or magic was involved in her return.

i bet she's the dark phoenix...
