I fall in that 1/2 that DOES know. "Emo kids" are just fans of emotional hardcore music. Now, Df02 and AC would probably swing by and give us a history lesson about how todays hardcore music was derived from it, but that's music, we're talking lifestyle.
These "emo-ers" we'll call them, just immulate the mood of the music, and the look of their counterparts. It's a trend, and that's all. They're just a whinier version of the pocket-protector nerds of the 80's. They took their style from Weezer who inadvertently became the trendsetters, style wise.
Just kids going through a phase, because when you get older, you realize that "emo" isn't Jimmy or Jane not liking you, pouring your empty heart out in a blog or gabbing about how cool So and so screamo band is. When your ass grows up, emo is wondering how you're going to pay your rent when you get laid off. Emo is falling behind in credit card debt. It puts all these kiddie issues to shame.

Emo stands for Emotional Hardcore - NOT NOT NOT HOW MANY ****ING TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT, NOT Emotional!
regardless of what they wear, it's a fashion... just like every other fashion in the world, even if you think you don't follow fashion if you buy and don't make your clothes - chances are someone else is gonna have the same top and jeans and shorts or whatever that you have. get the **** over it.
while we're at this why don't we slate rap fans that wear k-swiss and basketball tops. metallers that wear leather and have long hair. Punks that have mohawks and wear studded clothes etc. bubblegum pop girls that wear tiny skirts and peroxide their hair blonde.
ALOT of people follow fashion associated with their style of music preference... NOT JUST EMO-KIDS.
