Because Chris Claremont, originaly intended Sabretooth to be Logans pop, he hinted at it for a very long time but it was retconned by other writers.
When he was asked about their relationship he said this.

It was HINTED at and RETCONNED, seriously the WRITER has stated where he wanted the storyline to go, in Wolverine's solo run in the late 80's/early 90's he even had memories of Sabretooth beating him and calling him son.
Turned out that these memories were false and put there by Weapon X, this is where people get the IDEA from.
No he is not Logan's dad but it was the original intention of the writer that he was going to be, idea got dropped, all the hints were retconned.
I'm not asking you to comprehend rocket science here, just the simple fact that it was going to happen and then it was changed.
