because bruce was like a "time bomb"(haha see what i did there). As he traveled through time the omega energy built up more and more but once he finally got back to his right time the energy was suppose to release causing the end of the universe.
As you can probably tell Darksides end game didn't pan out lol.

^ Anyone Skyfather level and above can damage the shield.A berserk King Thor dented it with a strike from Mjolnir--and on a separate occasion, slagged it with a burst of his eye-beams. And recently, The Serpent (Odin's brother) shattered it like a cheap piece of tissue paper.

Would you say people like DC Ares, Thanos, Darkseid (not PC/GDS) could damage it?

Pretty sure in that instance the shield was shattered as a feat of Cap's terrible, terrible dialogue.Like a reverse Zatanna.
^ The canonicity of the Unilord thing is arguable. As seen here:

Is there a definitive run on Incredible Hulk that is widely considered by most to be its most well written?
For me, Peter David's run on the Hulk, as long as it was, is THE definitive Hulk run. There are like 8 volumes released in tpb of it, too.
He started around the #330 mark, and I think his last one was... #470, I think?
but yeah, that run is the reason I'm a fan of Hulk in the first place. Well, that and Bill Bixby.
