Actually I read a writer interview that said that it wasn't canon, but some of the general events of it were canon, just that the way they were depicted in that story wasn't necessarily how they "actually" happened.

The interview becomes moot when I can post 5+ handbook references that specifically site the events of The End as canon to 616.
