But he also made the OT.
Yes, but Lucas did not do EVERYTHING on the OT the same way he did with the PT. In the PT, he wrote and directed EVERY movie, with help in the screenplay on AOTC, and some of ROTS.
ANH is his baby, as he wrote and directed that, but Kasdan wrote ESB & ROTJ, Kershner directed ESB, and Marquand directed ROTJ. And Kurtz was much more influental as a producer then McCallum.
For example, the final shot of ESB as it pans away from Luke/Leia/Droids, Lucas did not want to bother with that shot of the new rebel base. Kurtz/Kershner pushed Lucas to shoot that final shot, and it is a great ending to a great movie, cause sometimes Lucas went by the mantra, "It is good enough." And I think he fell into that trap with the PT, as he needed someone just to nudge him and say, "George, this could be better."

Lucas did everything in his power to make the movies he wanted to tell. Regardless of a director, Lucas is the source of the storyline. The Director was under Lucas, and couldn't make shit with him. It is like telling the welder....or fabricator.....This is how I want it done.
Whether or not Kersner said Lucas should end it this way? Lucas made the final decision!

I'm sure I'm echoing the sentiments expressed much earlier in the thread, but I'll continue, anyway. No, they need not be remade. In most examples of current cinema, the remakes come after the story is told. In the case of Star Wars, the original story hasn't been told in a manner congruent to the foundation. The foundation is the original trilogy. As it stands, the preques haven't been told in such a fashion.
We can discuss remakes when the entire story has been told with it's own foundation in mind.

ESB was sort of a different animal then any other SW film, as this movie Lucas was never on the set of cause he was building Skywalker Ranch. The only time Lucas visited the set was when they were getting Yoda prepped and they all wanted to see if a puppet was believable.
As for final say on the storyline, Lucas is GOD of SW, but the most famous line in a SW movie, "I know." uttered by Han Solo to Leia before going into carbon freezing was changed by Kersh & Ford on the set. Lucas saw the first cut, and asked Kersh why they changed it? After Kersh pleaded his case, Lucas said he would let the audience at the premiere decide, and the fans loved that line.
My whole point is that a director has a huge influence of interpreting someones work, and that is why ESB sticks out so much of the remaining sequels. Lucas writes the story, and I don't think any of the 6 movies storylines are the problem with the movies, but it is the execution, and Kersh really brought an adult attitude that ROTJ & the PT are sorely lacking.
Yeah he was in Norway. Anyway Chewy 16 brings up some good points that I already thought about. Is that The ESB is the most acclaimed SW film of all time because is was one of the lowest grossing SW films of all time although it was far better in content and continuity that any other SW film. I dont like the pre-trilogy episodes: 1-3 as Lucas has almost ruined the format of SW with them. PM being the best of 'em. Kursh brought so much to the film that was missing from the original such as really cool dialogue more characterisation and generally more human in the emotions department. Plus TESB had some really good visual and bluescreen effects and a picture quality that was missing from every other SW film. RoJ is also a good film but some of the camera work and directing and cutting and intercuts ruins some key moments. Best bit from it is when the SSD bridge explodes and when the shield generator blows. Sorry if this post seems messed. lol 😄
