My Batman Begins Review... Spoilers included and whatnot...
Review: Batman Begins
Stars: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Cillian Murphy
Synopsis: The story of how Bruce Wayne became what he was destined to be: Batman.
Review: Before watching this movie I expected several things…
Bale to be a Good Batman
Neeson, Caine, Freeman and Oldman to be great.
Katie Holmes to not really serve much purpose or have that big a role in the movie
Liam Neeson’s Ducard character to be the real Ra's Al Ghul because some asswipe on KMC decided not to use spoiler tags… tw*t…
I mostly got what I expected…
Bale shines as the young Bruce Wayne trying to find his path in life. His vulnerability and quest for vengeance shine through. Yes he’s a tad too vicious at times, but that can be attributed to the young Bruce Wayne getting used to his position as Batman. The chemistry between him and Caine is superb; you actually believe these two have known each other for years…
Neeson, Cain, Oldman and Freeman all shine… give these guys a half decent script and they’ll do a great job… and they did… whoever pulled off this coup deserves an award… Neeson in particular stands out as the ruthless Ra…
Cillian Murphy does a good job as the sleazy, slimy Jonathon Crane aka The Scarecrow… I know to alot of people he’s a newcomer, but this guy is an accomplished actor who should be huge in years to come… He does a great job, and as for the infamous potato sack, it actually worked imo…
Katie Holmes’ character Rachel Dawes isn’t exactly given loads to do, but what she is given she does a competent job with… still think she hasn’t aged a day since she was down on the Creek with Dawson…
The Direction is pretty solid, no doubt people will whine about the choreography during the fights, though they don’t realise that it should be that way. It maintains the illusion that Batman is a creature of the night, one minute you’re standing there, the next you’ve had the crap kicked out of you and you never saw him hit you… that’s Batman. While his predecessors used different eras to influence Gotham and its inhabitants, Nolan makes it a point to make Gotham as modern and as real as humanly possible. It could be any large city in the present day, with its towering skyscrapers and dirty back alleys. One of the defining themes of the movie is that Batman is just a man with resources and training, and that anyone with similar resources and training could be Batman. That helps to make the character alot more accessible to the audience. The absence of CGI in a lot of scenes helps Nolan greatly, again contributing to the overall realism of the movie.
The writing and the dialogue are top notch, with some very funny moments. If Goyer sticks to writing rather than directing he’d be doing well for himself.
Do I have any complaints? Not really, minor issues that would be attributed to fanboyism…
Overall, this marks a fresh, brilliant new start to Batman on the big screen and just shows that a movie can be loyal to its source and still accessible to the general audiences…
I don't need to rate it, its simply that good...
One thing is also certain… Marvel has a hell of a lot to do to compete with DC Comics…
