Palpatine has already planted the seed into Anakin's head about how great he Is, and how the Jedi are corrupt and want to take over, and he can also read Anakin quite well, the proof to this Is how he knows the Council have asked him to spy on Palpatine, and how Anakin mentions even his trust In the Jedi has been shaken, Palpatine knows about Padme, and about Anakin's dreams (maybe Anakin had told him, but he seemed shocked when Palpatine said In his room about saving your wife from certain death) and Anakin seemed totally shocked by this, like how did he know such a thing, Palpatine has been playing mind games with everyone, he's clouded the Jedi for so many year's, he's played both side's so easily It's unbelievable, Palpatine shows he's got a connection to Anakin by the way he's still taunting him and telling him he's the only one with the power to save Padme, when Anakin Is waiting In the Jedi Council Chamber (And for the future, when Vader Is In trouble on Mustafar) Now, when people are saying there's no way he could of sensed Anakin on his way Into Palpatine's Chamber's at the moment he was fighting Mace I think are totally wrong, I think he clearly knew Anakin would return and show up, so now Imagine If Anakin had turned up and Palpatine had slaughtered all the Jedi so easily, that would not prove to Anakin that the Jedi are trying to take over, It'd just prove that Palpatine Is Indeed an evil Sith Lord, wanting to slaughter all Jedi and rule the galaxy for himself, so what does the man need to do, to prove otherwise, he makes out he's about to be killed by the betraying Jedi (i.e - Mace) so when Anakin arrives and sees Mace towering over Palpatine threatening to end all of this, It only provides Anakin with the truth he needed, that indeed the Jedi are trying to take over, and are even going to such extremes In slaughtering a defenseless chancellor whom the republic and Anakin look up to (think about It, It plays out perfectly), this Is just to turn Anakin to the dark side, and It works. Now before all that, when they are fighting, we see how confident and with such ease Palpatine takes out 3 'Jedi Masters' now when he's fighting Mace, there are '2' clear parts In that scene, where he could of killed Mace, 1. Is where he sticks his light-sabre up against Mace's chest, leave It there for a couple of seconds, Mace looks down, then Palpatine removes his light-sabre and continues to fight with him, the second and If you've got any leaked footage take a look at It and pause It at the specific moment of what I'm going to mention, as Anakin lands his speeder, Mace and Palpatine hold there light-sabre's above there head's, they begin to fight again, but pause It now, as Palpatine Is clearly 'BEHIND' Mace, Mace still has his back to Palpatine, and Palptine just stares and gives him a evil sigh look, again he could of taken him out when Mace's back Is turned to Palpatine, but lets him live to continue the fighting as Anakin has not arrived yet, don't you think it's Ironic the timing on Anakin just as Palpatine loses his lightsaber and is cowering away Is a little too 'perfect'? - Now, when Mace Is trying to convince Anakin that Palpatine is the traitor, Palpatine is making out he's weak when he clearly Isn't, look at his look and eyes (looking up at Anakin) when Anakin refers to Palpatine in being kept alive and stuff and you can't kill him and stuff, and once Anakin makes his decision he instantly springs to life, and blasts Mace out of the window, screeching the words 'UNLIMITED POWER' now he does not seem to be hurt, or weak at all.
actually i disagree about mace being key for anakin to go dark. sure, it didn't help him any in terms of staying on the light.
but there were MANY factors that were already in the works that was causing anakin to go dark.
1. where he was brought up as a child, he was a slave and others treated him and his mother like shit!
2. him losing his mother twice for having to leave her, for having the nightmares about her torment and finding her dying in his arms.
3. him killing the entire sand people and their village, their children - remember qui gonn's spirit sayin "anakin, no! no!"
4. his impatience and arrogance with obi wan and the jedi council.
5. his affection with padme - in retrospect, he killed her indirectly. ironic he was so determined to protect her yet he was her bane.
6. him killing dooku when he was defenseless.
7. hell just look at anakin in RoTS when it starts out, all his clothing is dark, he looks dark, he's brooding.
i don't think sidious could've taken mace. and anakin was WELL on his way to the dark side. i also don't think mace was key either, the fact tha sidious told anakin there's a way to manipulate the midi-chlorians in a body to prevent death - would've made him do anything. anakin would've bought, and done anything, anything sidious would tell him if there was even a remote chance of saving padme.
sidious has great power in forseeing the future, but obviously it isn't without its flaws and he's not stupid.

There is no valid proof that Sidious faked the Duel. He didn't say anything about it in the movie and i don't recall him calling out to Anakin. I love it when all the Sidious lovers gather around and make shit up like this.
