Full Review: Batman Begins

Got to take in the Midnight show of "Batman Begins" this evening with Ms. Addiction. Felt like writing up a little review, per the norm, so here we go.

Batman is back with a vengeance. In what could quite possibly be the greatest casting in comic book movie history, virtual unknown, Christian Bale's performance single handly breathed new life back into the once downward spiraling super hero franchise. From the opening of the film, and the new DC Comics logo, I knew all in attendance were in for a treat.

"Batman Begins" serves as a prequel to the 1989 live action film that started it all, directed by Tim Burton. In "Begins", we're treated to a solid hour of Bruce Wayne's chronology and how the bat came to fruition. Introduced are Alfred (Michael Caine) as well as Wayne's parents via a series of flashbacks, cut in with present day episodes. These, a la "Godfather 2", clued viewers in to the origins and birth of the Dark Knight. Intense training montages between Bale and the always impressive Liam Neeson were just the beginning, dazzling to watch accomanied by the breathtaking landscapes.

Act two weaves a story of how Wayne's once industrious hometown of Gotham City has become overrun by crime and violence, in desperate need of a heroic savior. Wayne, a supposed avid spelunker, stumbles upon a cave under his age old mansion, there, learning to embrace his fears, giving birth to his alter-ego, and thus finding motivation to save his hometown. Enter shady individuals like crime boss Falcone, and Jonathan Crane, aka "Scarecrow", brilliantly portrayed by "28 Days Later" star Cillian Murphy. Always looming in the background is Wayne's love interest, Rachel, played by Katie Holmes. While his guilt is outweighed by something else, Bale digs deep to take the law into his own hands, while exorcising his personal demons, ridding Gotham of the infestation.

What surprised me most about the film was how it felt less like the colorful, flashy, quippy comic book films were so used to. Batman was indeed dark, back to the Burton way of things, Only this time, he's got the machismo, the cunning, and the inner anger that the character was so sorely lacking. Bale equals perfection, as I said. In addition, he was surrounded by absolute Grade A supporting talents. Morgan Freeman, Katie Holmes, Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Liam Neeson, Rutger Hauer, Gary Oldman! It's a dream cast, and it flowed like such. The collective was absolutely incredible. The films presentation was also very intriguing, giving Batman a complexity to go with the newly uncovered origins.

My complaints are VERY few and far between, and lie mainly in chronology and continuity. If this were to serve as a prequel to the Burton original, there are flaws in the timeline. In the original Batman, his parents were killed in 1922. Then in Burton's film, it was closer to 1955, then in "Begins", it had to be around 1997, as there was clearly a Black 1999 Oldsmobile Aurora at Wayne Manor for the funeral, meaning "Begins" was actually taking place closer to 2010-2015? This was never really cleared up. Also, if Chill killed Wayne's parents, was Jack Napier lying in Burton's "Batman"?

Overall, I can say that this is easily the best cast comic book film of all time, and quite possibly the best Super Hero film I've ever seen. The adult theme worked, and was a welcome change. I'm glad to see Christopher Nolan resurrect the Bat, salvaging its dignity, with David Goyer's redeeming co-writing, after the atrocity that was "Blade: Trinity".

9.5/10 Batarangs..

If this were to serve as a prequel to the Burton original, there are flaws in the timeline.

It's not; Begins occupies a different continuity than the other movie. (necessarily, if they're planning to make a sequal, since most of the major villains have been either killed or irreversibly screwed up by now).

tis true...found this article Earning His Wings they pretty much say they are starting from scratch.

also in a BBC article WD posted they say "Influenced by Frank Miller's seminal comic Batman: Year One" which I think is true from the shear grittiness of the film...this movie quite a accomplishment! good review Cine. couldn't said it better myself. 😉

Just got back from seeing it and it was definetly one of the best movies I've seen in awhile, but it is not the best comic book movie of all time, that goes to Sin City. The beginning part just didn't do it for me. The family scenes were great, showing his attatchment to his father especially, but the training scenes with Neeson were to drawn out and overdone. Once Wayne became Batman though, there was no stopping the movie and it just cruised on until the ending. Probably my favorite sequence of the movie was the chase in the Tumbler, now that's a car chase! Overall I'd give it a 8.8 out of 10

"The adult theme"

I'd say it's more family themed.

Not compared to the last two Batman movies.

I'd say the last two Batman movies were kid themed. You couldn't get an adult to watch them if you paid them.

Exactly. Besides, family films aren't rated PG-13.

Loved it.
Great job with the actors and direction.

What I really liked was that this movie "world" felt lived in. It felt real. The batcave wasnt like an underground James Bond villian lair. It was a cave.

Tim Burton's felt too much like props, especially the second. (Not saying they sucked)

"Exactly. Besides, family films aren't rated PG-13."

was it PG-13? Because I honestly can't see why it got that rating. There wasn't really anything too bad in the movie. No blood (unless you count that scratch from the Ninja training..), etc... A lot of action, but it's not like there was any nudity or anything.

It's a movie the whole family can enjoy. Anyone who tries to say it's only for adults is kidding themselves.

Great movie. One of the best batman movies so far.

Had great movie lines, and a good plot. Never a dull moment.

He looked hot too, and the car was cool.

Only things I did not like was his voice was a little bit to deep. Sounded like he needed to cough or something. and scarecrow looked a bit weird.

Overall it was a great movie. 🙂

I posted this review at my Batman Begins group but thought I'd share it here. By the way...THIS IS NOT A PREQUEL! This film is the beginning of a whole new film series and all you have to do is watch the ending to know that. Gordon is only Lieutenant Gordon..not Commissioner like in '89. and in that film Joker doesn't become Joker till 1/4 of the way through. In this it is said he has a penchant for theatrics and left his calling card...meaning he is already Joker. (I do love the '89 film though)

The movie was awesome folks just awesome!!!! Ra's Al Ghul???Evil
Bast***!! Alfred?? Absolutely perfect!! The Scarecrow?? Freaky...not
scary (to me anyway) but damn freaky! Rachel (Holmes)...not as bad
as people say and the "love interest" angle is not played up that
much at all. I don't know what people were complaining about there.
Lucius Fox??? Perfect...couldn't have been done better!

A couple of things they took liberties with. Bruce and his parents
went to see "The Mark of Zorro", not the opera when they were
killed. And Joe Chill, yes he did kill his parents but he wasn't
caught. Bats ran into him years later as Batman. Then they
completely took that out of the modern era so that the guy is just
nameless. Of course they needed those angles for dramatic effect so
I forgive them. (Boy could I be more fan-girlish with that!LOL) But
I do like the opera angle because it does say in the comics that
Bruce's Dad was a BIG opera buff. So it works in that regard.

Now for the BIG question. How was Bruce/Batman??? Bruce is almost 2
seperate people without Bats already so they did it perfect. The
whole "Drunken playboy" angle is done to hilarious effect! Loved
that pg 8 of the newspaper! And as for Batman??? If there was
something that made the Scarecrow not look as scary....IT WAS HIM!!
Under the "fright" gas..to me Bats looked way scarier than the
Scarecrow! And the whole first outing of Bats...I jumped twice
during that scene. Totally shot like a boogeyman hiding in the
shadows...you can't see him but you know he's coming but from
where???? You can definately see why the thugs of Gotham would SH**
THEIR PANTS if they knew the BAT was after them! Finally someone has
captured the brutalness and scariness of the comics Bats we all love!
By the way folks......The Batmobile WORKS!! and in a BIG way! I
hated the look of it...but not anymore.

If you can tell....I LOVED this movie! Can't wait to go again! And
for those of you wondering who the next villian will be??? Let's
just say he sort of makes a surprise "CAMEO" at the end of the
film!! I squealled like a little girl when that happened!

GO GO GO AND ENJOY THIS FILM!!! You won't be disappointed!

The best part of the new Batman is just that. It is new. It's fresh, and inventive and it's not a prequel to any other batman movie, it's something totally different and amazing.

CA, great review!😱
Saw it this afternoon and I have to say to the people who are expecting a corny, nipple-protruding, anatomically correct, multi-colored costumed Detective movie...you are in for a refreshing batarang in the face.

Great resurrection and hopefully it will do well enough to produce quality sequels.
Not saying Burton's was bad, it's just time for a change. New audience, new story.

I enjoyed the movie and fully hope that anyone else who goes and see's it will too.

It's about time they used Batmans' greatest weapon...Fear.

o0o im not watching it till after my exams...which is like 2 weeks >__< ( yes yes, everyone please cry for me).....but iw as wondering..cos its been buggin me...does scarecrow have a costume? or is it just him with a potatoe bag on his head?
