He took on 4 jedi and killed them all. He didn't need Anakin's help, he wanted it to prove his point that the Jedi were trying to kill him. He could read Anakin's thoughts and dreams so you know he could sense him comming. Plus if mace didn't have a lightsaber, what would he do?
