Saints, gods, call them what ever you want. You still pray to them for help. Just like the old pagan gods of lesser and greater gods...

But there is a difference between a Saint and God.
Catholics ask Saints to pray to God for them, they dont pray to them for anything that only a God could too, i.e. redeem someone of sin, heal a leper or so on and so on.

There is a fundamental difference, Pagans worshipped these Gods. Catholics simply venerate. There is a difference.
