Reading the actual comic will help. What we saw was not what actually happened. And even in that memory sequence apparently the writer never intended for Thor to be that damaged. Not the first time it's happened to Thor. The time he was knocked out by a bullet, the gun looked ordinary but was intended to look like some big ass Kirby gun which would make sense because he said the bullet was made out of Vibranium or something similar.
