I know this is from Eu but applies here well. Luke marries mara jade. The NJO is more open minded. The supression of feelings was what made many young jedi turn to the dark side, because they were kinda unfamiliar with them. I think the experience Luke had with the dark side, open his mind a bit, cause you know, the sith use their feelings to fuel their power.

Luke changed a lot of things that he wasn't taught. IE Possession was forbidden, but Lowie owns a T-26, and Luke himself owns the X-Wing he used in ANH. I think his jedi order is better.
