OK is right, it is not nice of you to so aggressively reject his own testimony of the event. Even if you do not believe him there should be a certain respect shown in such circumstances which you could at least be more delicate about breaking.

Well, he clearly IS offended Deano- could you consider the possiblity that you read the situation wrong? Offence meant or not... you do look a little crass for making a joke about his experiences like that.

To refuse any consideration of apology makes rather negative statement of your character, I feel.

I am afraid others DO see how that is offensive though- seeing as you are basically rejecting his version of what were highly traumatic events, not sensible things to joke about directly to such a person.

If it were me, I would most definitely apologise, saying I had no idea he didn't think it was a joke and that I clearly meant no offence and am sorry that offence was caused.

I think that would be the good and decent thing to do, and that not doing so therefore shows a want of both goodness and decency, To pretend no-one could be offended... is either close-midned or silly.

i was fortunate enough to be at home when 9-11 happened but know people who were there. it was far more horrid than buildings simply collapsing, but rather gruesome carnage littering the streets from the people who were in those planes. its not something to joke about.
if someone was there who had to witness this and lose friends on top of that, and you would laugh in their face just to prove some benign point...i feel sad for you. you are so in the wrong here its not even funny.
