And now more from the Ophelia blog:Ophelia's eyewall is coming onshore, so the eye's probably about 70 miles from where I'm sitting. This is an extremely slow moving storm, meaning there's going to be water, water everywhere until about Friday. Already, behind our factory, a small lake has formed. I'm leaving to go home at 3:30 today instead of 4:30, because I can't drive 85 MPH on the way home - more like 45 today.
Take care, man... and take it easy on the freeway.
Btw, has anyone heard from Shellie or know what part of North Carolina she's from?
A bunch of New Orleans kids are now attending my school (about 100+ of them) and my friend asked one who does he sit with at lunch? you know to try to be nice and welcoming and he replied "Oh, they have a special room upstairs for refugees to eat together."
Isn't that just rediculous. I mean they are fellow Americans not aliens!! 😖

hmm that makes sence, Katrinas central pressure was low enough for it to be considered as a CAT 5, even if winds weren't quite high enough when it hit land.
just like they adjusted the Magnitude of the December 26 quake, its only afterwards, when they looked at the mechanism of the quake they bumped it up from 8.9 to 9.1
It was 9.3 actually.
True the pressure in Katrina at landfall was 918 Mbar while Andrew was 922 Mbar. Note Andrew was reclassified as a 5 ten years after it hit. At least Katrina came down from 902 Mbar rating it had only 150 miles of the coast. That was one scary storm when it had those 175 mph winds. I never ever saw a storm so large and organized ever.
However there is some information going around...
"An report from the mayor of Slidell, Louisiana noted that sustained winds of 176 mph (284 km/h) were reported at Slidell Airport, so many believe that Katrina was really a Category 5 hurricane at landfall."
If that is true ill be shocked. Then no wonder it killed so many.

That's news to me. Also, I heard that they bumped Gaston from 2004 from a TS to a Cat 1. It hit Cat 1 status at noon on that Sunday.
I've been hearing since about a week after it hit that they've been reconsidering reclassifying it; in fact I said that several times in this thread.

I never found out they bumped it up from a TS to a CAT 1 until last week when I was looking into the Gaston timeline! I haven't even seen the name Gaston mentioned in this thread! So there!
p.s. I know you're talking about Katrina 😛
