Indeed, sometimes I think I would have liked to have followed such a path. But then it is never to late to learn - there is a healthy number of mature age students doing history at my uni.
There is an ex-cop (47) doing his thesis at the moment, and a 90 year old chap who has been retired for 20+ years ago who in the last 10 of them got into history and is now doing is doctorate - mature age students who pursue such interests when they feel the time is right.

Yeah, I figured I'd make my millions and then be a patron of the sciences. That way I can dig in the dirt for fun and interest sake, and go home to manage my stock portfolio at night.
