As for "The Alliance should be gathering...", the galaxy is a big place, and if the Alliance was all in one place, it wouldn't really work out. 😄

Well in the movies, yeah sure he didn't have any woman. But in the EU he did. Palpatine probably had them off doing some mission that probably didn't have a real point. 🙂
