i'm still on the fence on this one. should decenants (who did nothing wrong) pay for past mistakes of the older generation, who, if still alive would probably still think they were perfectly correct and justified in their actions? we dont have the "reparation" deal in Australia but our prime minister has made no bones in not appologising to the "stolen generation," which i kind of think is sucky but kind of agree with. its not something that is black and white, such a huge grey area.

If I were white and I knew my ancestors committed what they did to other human beings for hundreds of years, I'd be for helping out in some way, even if it was minor. But instead racism is offered. It's horrible.

yeah but if someone with a family history that includes slavery gives the descendants a small amount of money, they're considered cheapskates and are instantly branded racists again. sure, some of the people who had slaves did go on to be mega rich, but not all of them. i'm sure there are suburbanites with a history of slavery in the family tree, they dont have large sums of money to give away as reperation to past crimes.
if say (and this is an example people, not fact) Bill Gates checks out his family history, finds that his great, great, great, great grandfather had slaves and wants to give them money as an appology, good for him, he could give their familys $25 million each and it'd be a drop in the ocean. but if i looked back and found out i had a great great great great grandfather who had slaves, i couldn't afford to pay their decendants reparations. So modern day blacks and other non-whites aren't also enjoying these benefits? Of course slavery is immoral and it took some time for us as humans to realize that and put an end to it, but blacks weren't the only slaves in history! It was Africans that sold members of conquered tribes to the whites, after all. And what about all the benefits we enjoy from advancements made by the Roman’s slaves and the Egyptian’s slaves, or ANY OTHER SLAVE that contributed to the greater good of humanity, even if it was against their will and done rather cruelly. I’m not saying that slavery is a good thing, but what I am saying is what’s done is done and there’s really no point in paying the decedents of slaves any money. Sure, racism still exists, but that doesn’t make everyone who doesn’t want to give black people reparations a racist! And who’s gonna pay for the reparations, anyway? The federal government? It wouldn’t be a good idea to take EVERYONE’S tax dollars and use it to give black people reparations. Are just white people gonna have to pay? If every single caucasian had to pay reparations to African American slave decedents, that simply wouldn’t be fair. They would have to trace down the history of slave-owners and have their decedents get paid. And what if a decedent of a black slave is also a decedent of a slave-owner (a majority of black people in America have at least some white in their family tree). It’s just too complicated and highly unnecessary to go through all that. Most black people have it pretty good in America, and things can only get better for them.

Of course people should to what they can to contribute to the poor and unfortunate, black and otherwise, but reparations for all black people is certainly not the answer. As I said before, racism is still around, but it’s NOT the reason white people don’t want to pay reparations. You’re generalizing way too much.

Seems awfully specific there - do you only want the descendants of slavers to pay money to the descendants of actual slaves? Or do you want all white people to pay to all black people?
I still don't think reparations are the way. What good, prey tell, would a lump sum of money really achieve (other then buggering up the economy)? How much money would it take to wash away the pain? Or would you agree it would be better for money to be allocated to things like education, health care and the like in order to reduce the current day gap?
