I was really into the other discussion, so if you want to know what ol' Cinemaddiction has to say on the matter, look on pagses 1-3 of the original thread.
In a nutshell, I said that nobody is owed anything by people who were supposedly "guilty by association", and there are blatant instances of racism commited in mainstream America by black people against THEMSELVES than white people. So, I don't even feel slightly obligated to "help" when you can't even help yourself by bettering education, raising awareness, or..frankly..giving a **** enough to open your eyes and see the self-destructive behavior one's using everyday that's resulting in a great social divide.
Realize and appreciate the distinction between pride in heritage and "indirect" racism, then we'll talk. Be grateful for what you have now and use your freedom wisely.

It is an interesting point. I remember, back when I did the units on American history in high school, how one text book noted it was a misconception that the South was fabulously rich. In fact, the best most could say for themselves was they were asset rich, assets tied up in slaves, and large tracks of land that could only be effectively farmed, at the time, by slave labor.
It thus was something of a nasty cycle - the south produced raw materials which went North relatively cheaply where they were manufactured and sold for a profit, as a result the south was often in dept to the North, and as such had to buy more slaves to farm more land in order to make more raw materials in order to keep their head above the line - one of the reasons why the south was so resistant to calls for abandoning slavery.
The point of this little tangent? I am also wondering the grounds for claiming there are so many, many white people living on profits made off of slaves - where on earth is this coming from? How about some facts/proof/statistics to back it up?

Exactly - what percentage of the US population is rich based upon inheritance? A very, very small part, which gets even smaller when one removes all the families that made their fortune themselves. It really is a theory that doesn't stand up to history or common sense that there is some massive section of the white population that lives on the profits of slavery. Just like there isn't some massive portion of the German population that lives on Nazi gold and so on.
