Woman booted off U.S. flight over T-shirt mocking Bush

Started by tabby9995 pages

i think she was stupid for wearing a shirt with profanity into the airport and expecting no problems, theres always been problems with profanity in places like that, Cory from Slipknot nearly got arrested once for having a shirt with "fu*cker" on it. i own a "Not My President" Anti-bush shirt, never had any problems, but thats because theres no profanity on it. in some states in america (dunno about Aus) if over 5 people complain about a person wearing offensive clothing (i.e profanity on a shirt) the police can arrest you. happened to some kid wearing a Marilyn Manson shirt, i did an essay on censorship for a school project once

so i guess now this airline will force anti-bush t-shirts in the same basket of knives, scissors and razor blades.

Wow, arresting someone cause they're wearing a MM shirt? That's going a bit...far.

"There ought to be limits to freedom." George W. Bush, 1999

Obviously wearing a t-shirt on a plane that uses profanity and criticizes the President is beyond those limits. But Dick Cheney can say "Go **** yourself." to a Senator in the Senate building and not suffer any repercussions.

Excellent point.

Anything can be considered offensive. If you try to remove everything from society that is potentially offensive to anyone, there will be nothing left. Presumably no one was forcing the people on the plane to look in the direction of the shirt. I find pro-Republican imagery offensive. There are no laws against that.

Wearing an explicit T-shirt on a plane is illegal, she did it, she's not going to win.

If there was a precedent against obscene language, fine, but they can't just make up laws against stuff that is arbitrarily classified as "offensive".

Using profanity on the Senate floor while Senate is in session is prohibited. The reason he didn't violate Senate rules is that Senate was apparently "technically not in session" according to Senate officials when he told Sen. Leahy to "Go f*ck yourself!"

What a very...very...strange occurence....

Difference is that she didn't just say "go **** yourself." I'm sure she could've easy cursed someone out and gotten off with a warning. But she didn't. She wore a shirt with a profane word displayed on it.. that didn't go away. So they asked her to cover it up, she failed to comply, and she chose to get off the plane rather than turn her shirt inside out.

Comparing this to the incident with Cheney on the senate floor is a bit ridiculous to begin with, but if you really want to.. let's imagine that instead of saying "go **** yourself," Cheney went into the meeting with a shirt that said "go **** yourself" in huge letters. Same thing? You think it would have gotten the same reaction? I doubt it.

There SHOULD be limits to freedom. Anyone who says otherwise is, if his or her philosophy is implemented, going to be in a world of hurt.

(Yes, off-topic, but still.)

Heh

Oh come on that was Stupid to boot a women off a plane just cause of that ! and i hate ppl angering over the opposite party, we may Be part of different Groups but it does not mean we should hate each other !

The comment by Bush was made in reference to a website critical of him. Is that where the limit should be? Being critical of Bush?

I didn't imply you said anything. ^This was a question to you. Humour my curiosity. Do you think this woman overstepped some mark by being critical of Bush and using an expletive?

Obsenity is not covered by the first amendment and seeing as the Airline is private property, they were completly within their juristiction.
Not saying it was right, but it falls under the "Fire in a crowded theater" Clause in the First amendment (not exactly what its called but you get my point.)
