IIRC, he also had a similar moment during Godfall where he covered his eyes and feared that just moving the wrong way would cause massive damage.

But, even back in '87 was Superman able to fight to Darkseid, to what I would call, Darkseid getting beat.
He avoids the Omega beams, and makes them fire into Darkseid's face, and then takes some punishment, before ultimately getting the upper hand against Darkseid, and then getting teleported away.
Darkseid admits he lost in the last page.

Byrne mentioned that encounter. He said that Darkseid would have killed Superman, so the only option was to let the beams hit one of the very few things capable of surviving them, which was Darkseid himself.
