Still a long way to go.

How do you feel about an American AF team?

Good actually, I don't like Alpha Flight just because their Canadian. Hell, they have have had a World Tour where they traveled the world visiting superheroes, battled in multiple dimensions even at one time staying there for 3 months, traveled in space, etc. Their not merely fighting for Canada, but the world. Anyways it all depends on who the cast is and if they make interesting stories, I just hope they use some of the former members of Alpha Flight and not just ignore them.

They were planning on brining AF back in a different way than Miller pitched the Civil War idea and Marvel went with it.

What could have been; AF, Liefeld and Cable

[B]"With all due respect to Walt Simonson, Stryfe was brought to the table months after Cable was created, designed and implemented. Cable was in fact first introduced as a character in an Alpha Flight proposal that I gave to Danny Fingeroth that was green lit and moving forward until an Alpha Flight re-launch was ultimately ruled out, a condition necessary for me to jump over from the X-office. Cable walked in the doors with me when I arrived at Marvel, he eventually turned up in New Mutants and here we are 17 years later. Not Commander X, Not Quinn, Cable.

"Bob trusted me with turning the New Mutants around and after a brief period with Louise Simonson, I was handed control of the title and we created comics history. The book went from the lowest selling X-Men title to the top of the charts. Issue #100, the single proudest achievement of my Marvel career, had four printings and sold 1 million copies. No variants, no trading cards, just momentum from a story and artwork that excited a generation of fans to jump on board, setting the stage for the 5 million copies of 'X-Force' #1.

"As for Cable's influences, look no further than Bruce Willis circa 'Die Hard' meets a certain death dealing cyborg from the future. Cable however, with his mixture of sci-fi-mutant-action-hero-big-guns-pouches-scar-cyborg-fruits-to-nuts character mix did indeed create his own brand of creative spin-offs and rip-offs. Magog being one of the most obvious admitted examples."

"Alpha Flight," I asked? This was new info...

"Well, before I was committed to New Mutants, I was looking for a vehicle that I could have more plot input on and it turns out that they were looking for a new team on 'Alpha Flight.' I was a huge fan and sent in a two year proposal that pre-dates my start on 'New Mutants' by about seven months. Cable was introduced as a soldier from Wolverine's past, who would have worked with the existing Alpha Flight roster. Danny Fingeroth was eager to get me on the series, but when it wasn't going to be re-launched I opted for 'New Mutants' and was able to do a dramatic housecleaning with editorial's blessing. My second issue of 'New Mutants,' there were several new characters of my design and creation that debuted, including but not limited to Cable. The entire MLF roster was created by me, Thumbleina, Tempo, Fourarm, Wildside, Reaper were among the new villians including Stryfe to appear. The book's tone and direction was changed from that point onward. There was little to no resemblance to what had gone before with the previous creative teams. Fans can make up thier own minds as to how much I did or did not contribute to what was a wholesale creative face lift on a book that was facing cancellation as I accepted the assignment."

Reader “matt983”: In Civil War #1, it was said that the capekiller teams would be armed with tranquilizers, and not real bullets. But in subsequent issues, it seems like they've been using live rounds (against Cap in New Avengers, and against Patriot in Civil War #2, before they knew he was bulletproof). Even in Civil War #3, after Wiccan and Cloak are tranquilized, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent talking to Spider-Man seems to be aiming a gun with real ammunition.

So my question is, what brought about the escalation from "tranq and retain" to "shoot to kill?"

JQ: Come on now, matt983, ol’ buddy, I think you're reading into things.

"Seems to be aiming a gun with real ammunition"?

In Civil War #2, the order is very specifically given and followed through on in regards to Patriot: tranquilizers, and minimum force. Similarly, there's not one word in New Avengers #21 that indicates that the shots the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are firing are actual rounds.

Which of course brings up the question whether or not Alpha Flight is really dead?

King Mundi, you're a scan pimp! I had to sign up to this forum just to give you props for this. I've read a little bit of Alpha Flight, mostly in other books, but I had no idea they could do half of this stuff.

If I may ask, can you recall/post any 'feats' of the the Department H building itself, ie internal/external defenses, guards/soldiers, durability, etc.?

Hey Mungi, just in case you haven't heard, in the new edition of the Bendis Tapes (http://www.wordballoon.com/), Bendis mentions that there'll be an announcement at the upcoming Toronto con about a book that "...that has a special place for Canadians. It's a special announcement just for canadian comic book fans." A book he won't be writing by the way.

So yeah... Sounds like Alpha Flight to me...

King Mungi, not Mundi. Sorry.

Yeah, Alpha Flight is powerful.

Aurora vs. Infinity War Aurora Clone
Alpha Flight #111: Here Aurora comes face to face with her evil clone, which has her powers as well as her thoughts. She admits her Aurora powers are ineffective on her, but due to her split personality of Jeanne-Marie she uses her "nuke" attack incincerating the evil clone.

Alpha Flight vs. Brain-Drain
Alpha Flight #108-During Alpha Flight's World Tour they end up in a conference with Europes predominent heroes until the villian Brain-Drain arrives and acts. He places a hypnotic command into the European heroes to kill their political heroes, so it's up to Alpha Flight to stop the heroes but first they have to defeat Brain-Drain.

Feats shown:
-Northstar mentioning he can read at superspeeds
-Northstar appeared to have not moved at all, opened the 6 doors for the cilvilians to escape
-Weapon Omega using his super-speed reflexes saves Ursula from ice shards
-Aurora showing telepathy is mostly useless on her as she just switches her personalities
