This has me totally confused... I don't understand how they could have paid 10 each, making 30... and then had 1 returned to each of them, meaning they paid 27... and yet the bell hop only pocketed 2 dollars. WHAT happened to the other one? And don't just say lost/stolen, because the math doesn't add up. Or am I being stupid?

They didnt actually pay $27. The difference between 30 and 27 is 3. BUT the clerk gave back 5 so for them to have actually paid 27 after gettin $5 back back they would have had have paid $32 in the first place. I dont know where Im goin with this yet..I'll post again when I know what Im doin 😕

EDIT: See the problem is perception. Forget the guests for a minute. The clerk recieved $30 bucks and gave back $5 right. That means the guests ACTUALLY paid $25 but because they only recieved $3 THEY THINK they paid $27 as do you because you're approaching from the guests point of view.

Yeah, so that makes it three people (including me) have got it so far.

I got it but I didn't post the answer

Think of it like this:

Guests pay $30
$25 to clerk
$2 to the hop
$3 to themselves

OR:

Since they recieve the $3 back anyways we just dont count it.
Guests pay $27
$25 to clerk
$2 to hop

Now I think I get it. At first you think the total is $30 because thats how much it seems the guests lose. But because they recieve 3 back they really lose $27, its in the riddle itself they paid $27. You DO NOT try and make it add up to 30 because thats not the total the total is 27 because thats how much they lose in the end. Man Im having fun with this riddle. I just hope Im not way off and looking like an ass right now..

Anymore brain teasers leader?

Nah, I don't fell like thinking.

I'm on mini vacation.

Ah ok then
