In my opinion Dr. Gordon is dead. There are a bunch of theories and ideas on the net that he was kept alive by Jigsaw. Most people say that in SAW II, when they show Jigsaw setting up the traps he is limping so it must be Gordon, since he sawed off his foot in SAW, but it seems they forget that Jigsaw has cancer and until he was bed ridden he wouldn't exactly be moving too good. Go back and watch SAW, Dr. Gordon is about dead while he is talking to Adam at the end of the movie, Gordon even says so himself that he is going to bleed to death, so if he survived and is brought back in the next film (if there is a next film) I would be surprised.
In the above interview with James Wan and Leigh Whannell, Whannell states that

As far as Daniel is concerned at the end when Jigsaw takes Det. Matthews to the "real house" while all the cops go to the "decoy house" we learn the video feed is really taped, so that means the whole thing happened before the police even got to Jigsaw's hideout/lair. Kerry finds Daniel in the safe, he had already gone through the house and had now been returned to the lair, in the safe, waiting for Detective Matthews to come in.
I'm still iffy on the movie. I'm a huge fan of the first Saw, a good fan of the second, but with this one it's still up in the air for me.
What made the movie iffy for me was the ending. There's just too many things that happened in the last five minutes that made me go "oh please". Too many unnecessary twists upon twists. Don't get me wrong, I like the occasional surprise twist (Saw I has one of the best ever) but there were just too many here. I mean I half expected Dr. Gordon to suddenly come out and say "game over" and him mentioning that he's the new apprentice.
But the torture devices were still awesome. Jigsaw's personal favorite was freakingly good. And seeing Jigsaw operated on was great stuff. Now that's some squirmy stuff. Plus Amanda was pretty nice, and she's a total babe =) And to top it off it was great to see some people from the first and second movie again.
Just got back from it, HOLY SWEET MOTHERF*CKING JESUS it kicks ass. drool Gotta go and see it a couple more times. droolio
Unfortunately I missed the first 5 or so minutes, I walked in right when the screen said 'SAW 3'. After the first few traps, I was thinking 'is this going to be random traps the whole way through and end up sucking major ass?' but when it went onto the doctor chick it was 'cool, must be getting somewhere story wise'.

I wasnt sure whether they'd have sub-par traps and just pile on the gore to fill it in, but I loved most of them, in fact I dont think was a trap that didnt suck, except maybe Jeff's first test with the nekkid chick, that was kinda lame. Loved the tie ins to the previous movies, they were nifty.....didnt understand John's flashback thing...wtf was that about? Just seemed a bit random and stupid, and Amanda's letter was a bit queer, just didnt explain anything.

Sorry to burst your bubble Mist but SAW IV was confirmed the very DAY that SAW III came out. I to wish they would have stopped on III but they know if they release another one everyone will go see it so they're going to milk this series for as much money as they can get.

I personally hope they go for a prequel. - Bring in more of the past relationship/prior life of Jigsaw that they hinted at during flashbacks. For those that have read the comic book - Jill. I think that be way cool, and it would also kinda be a way of starting fresh.

Yeah, I dont think they'll reuse Jeff again, everyone was thinking #3 would continue from Det. Matthews, but it only had a few minutes to clean up his story.
Saw 4 is going to suck story-wise.
Spoiler:#4 will be completely new, unless they do a prequel of sorts. It would have left a bit open if
John is dead, Amanda is dead, the cop chick from #2 is dead, everyone from each movie is now dead.

In the first Saw, her game was to remove the key from her co-workers stomach, this is the question she had to ask herself, would I rather have my jaw ripped open, or do I want to live and cut open my friends stomach. WOW what a test!
Now lets take a look at the other test,
A guy had to climb through barbed wire, another one had to cut open his own eye to extract the key from it, and what about the lady who had to

You see a trend here? All of these people had a serious question to ask themselves. Do I want to die or do I want to inflict some serious pain to myself and live.
I dont think it was any of them, I thought Jigsaw said 'Its in the stomach of your dead cellmate' or something to that effect, from Amanda's point of view it was some nobody. Amanda didnt win anyway, to win, you are supposed to change yourself from the game and she was right, nobody ever changes, she won her game but she didnt 'win' or else Jigsaw wouldnt have made

I think the most likely reason is cause he's dead, I mean think about it, if he was alive, he would have known where the hideout was after escaping from it, and could have informed police to find Adam. Jigsaw would have walked right past him at the end of the movie after he left Adam for dead, but I doubt he'd kill him, Amanda could have done it though. Plus with his foot missing he would have been bleeding like crap, and still would have had to crawl through the whole house to escape.
What happened to Det. Matthews foot? I wasnt paying attention, but why was it all mangled?

Like I said, the reason he didn't come back for Adam could be because he's in a coma.
I just think if he was dead they would have made some kind of reference to him or actually showed his dead body, which they did with Adam and Zep, but no Dr. Gordon, he could possibly be in Saw 4.
