Destroyed ? more like re-built. France reconstructed itself after the Second World War with much foreign labour ; mostly from North African origin.
Haven't read all here, so excuse me for double posting or stepping on already squished toes.
The situation in some French suburbs is loathsome, as said, great deal of unemployment, bad social service and a population of 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants feeling neglected. It has been a powderbarrel waiting for it's fuse to get lit a long time.
I do understand people stepping up in order to demonstrate against their conditions, demanding a better life. As France is wise and wealthy enough to have been able to avoid situations like this.
On the other hand, the victims of France's neglection should have started thinking for them selves a long time ago, instead of waiting for a reason like the 2 kids who got electrocuted in a power-outlet while hiding from the cops to finally speak their minds. And for the manner of expression, who would seriously be expecting to be taken for a serious conversational entity when all you do is burn schools and cars in order to express your anger? I wish that was only the least, but several people got shot in these acts and a woman just having the bad luck of getting too near to the riots was drenched in petrol and set afire, fighting for her life (or what will be left of it) in the hospital right now.
What I think is going on is that a fairly small group of 'desperado's' found no other way then violence make them selves notable (which I can understand in some way) and that a great deal of not worthy to live assholes just viewed that as a reason to bring hell just because they finally have a cloak to hide behind.
The riots are spreading to Germany and The Netherlands, where social services, welfare and housing is top o' the notch, but even here the situation in France seems enough of an excuse to destroy, loot and burn.
Where I'm pointing at is that in the whole there might be 20% real victims, and 80% 'don't even have a word for them' just riding along having a good old time destroying and hurting, just because now they can say why.
I can fully respect France, and soon next countries, to deploy the army against the violators, think about it, your car being the next one on fire is the least of your worries when you have a daughter who likes to take the dog for a walk at dark.

France was behind integration. They accepted immigrants.
If I understand correctly, what you are trying to say is that immigrants have been given the option to live in France, in a european style, in which they can have an opportunistic future favouring them.
With 3rd gen. immigrants being born and bred there, France is expecting them to abide with the 'French way' of life, as you put it, such as, for example, that recent motion to ban muslim head scarves for the women.
From one side, muslims say "Its our Custom" and from the national level, most french say "Its not France's custom".
That is just one small example of tolerance (sic).
You cannot blame immigrants or their children for taking their "Way of Life" seriously into France. Whats happening is 'immigrants' are suffering from prejudice, and not being given equal opportunities, hence the riots.
You cant pin the blame on them with "Its their fault, ra ra ra *rant* ", cause with that argument you create more division.

Very reminiscent of American ghetto culture. And quite personally I think we should consider that the so-called "The Western world" needs to start taking resposibility for their own mistakes. You rarely hear the word "Sorry" anymore.
These people aren't some low-life scumbags waiting for an opportunity to smash things. These people are human beings! There is got to be better threatment for them. Give them jobs not Welfare checks. Whether is in the US or in Europe or anywhere in the world. All this stupid prejudice will lead to an even bigger disaster. Let's fix the problem before it gets far more worse.
