Sancty Sancty, I have a question for you!

I have a friend who is traveling to Japan next month. He doesn't have a place to stay and he's trying to avoid super expensive hotels and such. He said if he doesn't find a place to stay, then he'll just bring a sleeping bag. I don't really think that's a good idea???

Do you know of good ideas/places for people to stay?? He also only really knows English and broken Japanese.

EDIT: I think he'll first be in Tokyo, then try to go to Osaka, and explore beyond that.
