Our word "thug" actually comes from a description of murderous cult members from 19th century India. Perhaps old or unsurprising knowledge for some, even, or especially, for those raised on Indiana Jones films.
Unlike in the IJ film, however (Temple of Doom), real life thugees went out of their way to avoid the visible spillage of any blood, ironic, perhaps, because their goddess, Kali, shown in modern rendering in my last scan, is famous for a ... scarlet dance, which left her husband slain, along with the demon of myth that they fought.
