Early leis were given as gifts to one another, or as a sign of love and devotion to Hawaiian gods.

The lei greeting began in the late 1800s/early 1900s when ships brought hundreds of visitors to the islands for the first time. Locals waited on shore to greet the guests as they disembarked.

Early visitors would toss their leis overboard by Diamond Head in hopes they would return someday.

Leis are given to mark special occasions such as weddings, births, graduations and even funerals.
