Where to begin? “Carpets” are floor coverings that are installed and which can span wall to wall, whereas “Rugs” are generally movable.

One of the more official definitions of the words rug and carpet has to do with size. The word rug has come to mean a smaller item (as in an area rug that is around 4 feet by 6 feet or less) while the word carpet reflects bigger items (as in an area carpet that are over 4 feet wide and 6 feet long).

The key difference between rug and mat is that the rug is a thick and heavy floor covering that does not extend over the entire floor whereas the mat is a piece of coarse material placed on a floor for people to wipe their feet on.

Accent rugs are smaller than area rugs, but not as long as runner rugs, often called a throw rug or scatter rug. These rugs are great in the kitchen, in front of a fireplace, in a child's room and entryways. These rugs are typically used in hallways, stairs and other narrow spaces.
