Insurance began as a way of reducing the risk to traders as early as 5000 BC in China and 4500 BC in Babylon. The first life insurance policies were taken on in the early 18th century in the UK.

As a driver reported on his insurance claim, he was involved in a minor rear-end collision in which he smashed the taillight of a car ahead. He then reversed slightly so that he could survey the damage, but in a stroke of ill luck, he hit the front bumper of the driver behind him. Then, when he opened his door to exit his vehicle, he knocked down a passing cyclist! While those who witnessed the accident were probably in stitches by the time it was over, we imagine the unfortunate driver was less than amused.

Records show that 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active season recorded in history, seeing storms with winds up to 185mph and a total of 28 storms altogether – with 15 hurricanes and 3,913 fatalities. The cost of the damage caused was around $158.9 billion, with approximately $130 billion paid out as insurance. $45 billion of which was paid out for damage caused by Hurricane Katrina alone.

Most people have homeowners insurance to cover things like house fires or robberies, but what if your burglar suffers from mental anguish due to a faulty garage door opener? This happened to one couple who went away on vacation for a week. While on vacation a burglar robbed their home and tried escaping through the garage. The burglar ended up locking himself in their garage because the garage door opener wouldn’t work. He was trapped there for a week and forced to dine on dog food and soda – the only edible items he could find. The burglar escaped when the family came home and promptly filed an insurance claim against the owner for mental anguish. He was awarded $1 million.

In 1970, a dead sperm whale washed up on the beach near the town of Florence, Oregon. The brilliant means of disposing of the carcass eventually decided upon was to blow it up with dynamite, which resulted in someone's new car being destroyed by a 500 pound chunk of rotten whale blubber. He was quoted by the local newspaper as saying he was never going to get his insurance agent to believe it. (For the record, he was able to do so rather easily, though the insurance agent did say that it was a new one.)
