Season 7, episode 20, The Calzone
Costanza eats a pepperoni and eggplant calzone for lunch one day, and “big Stein wants a little taste.” After trying it, Steinbrenner becomes obsessed with having that calzone from one specific restaurant for lunch every day. A task easier said than done for someone with George Costanza’s incompetence.
“Babe Ruth was a fat old man…”
Season 8, episode 20, The Millennium
After getting quietly recruited by the New York Mets, Costanza has to find a way to get fired from the Yankees before the crosstown team can hire him. So he puts Babe Ruth’s uniform on and purposefully gets food all over it. Amazingly, not only does that not get him fired, but Steinbrenner actually praises him for it because “Babe Ruth was nothing more than a fat old man with little girl legs.” And then he, too, goes for a piece of memorabilia by trying on Lou Gehrig’s pants.
George is dead
Season 7, episode 12, The Caddy
Costanza locks his keys in his car while parked in the Yankees’ lot, which eventually leads Steinbrenner to believe that George is dead. So he shares the bad news with the Costanzas, whose indifference perfectly encapsulates that of nearly every other character on the show at some point. This moment gets even better when Frank Costanza – rather than mourn the loss of his son – uses this opportunity to viciously chastise Steinbrenner for trading Jay Buhner: “You don’t know what the hell you’re doing!”
“Billy Martin…Billy Martin…”
Season 7, episode 4, The Wink
The major plot of this episode is that George Constanza is involuntary winking at everyone, which leads to the firing of his colleague, Mr. Morgan. Despite not wanting the job, Steinbrenner promotes George, and that opens the door for the Yankees owner to hilariously list off all the managers he’s fired over the years, including manager Billy Martin several times. It’s a spectacular rant that combines comedy with the sometimes unpredictable nature of baseball.
