Onion rings first made their appearance in an ad for Crisco in a New York Times magazine that was published in 1933. The advertisement included a recipe for onions that are sliced, dipped in milk, dredged in flour, and then deep-fried.
Many restaurants claim to have invented this yummy snack. However, the exact origin of these rings remains unknown.

The United States is responsible for producing more than two million metric tons of onions each year! It makes us proud to be part of an American tradition!
Americans can’t get enough of these delicious eats and consume 20 pounds of these deep-fried rings per person annually.

Onion rings aren’t just sides for hamburgers—they pair well with beef, chicken, and fish dishes.

Topping many a list of foods that are fried, which means they're cooked in oils full of saturated fat, onion rings contain difficult-to-digest fats and can lead to problems with diarrhea and bloating. Onion rings can also encourage harmful gut bacteria.

McDonald's has never introduced onion rings, even as a limited-time offer, as fewer people would order its French fries — which are “over the top profitable” for the chain. With onion rings they would be selling a much less efficient, much less profitable item, so…not gonna happen.
