On Good Eats, a town is being terrorized by a vicious clam (in a parody of Jaws). Alton explains at the town assembly that it's physically impossible for a clam to do that, but the townsfolk will have none of it. Later, it's revealed that the man attempting to catch the clam made the whole thing up to draw in tourists.

The phrase clam up originated in the United States in the early 17th century. It's a great example of the English language's habit of taking inspiration from nature. Just as a clam closes its shell when sensing danger, humans tend to close up and stop talking when they're uncomfortable or in a difficult situation.

On SpongeBob SquarePants, clams (and scallops) are, like every other species in the series, sentient creatures — their shells act as their jaws when they speak (though they can also act as wings since clams are a lot like birds in the world of SpongeBob, so they can actually travel this way).

Beginning a run of old-timey slang that would have been popular among 1920s bootlegging gangsters, the word clam was probably used as a term for a dollar based on the practices of using shells as currency seen in ancient societies and some Native American tribes.

In the 1960s Batman series, Robin gets "eaten" by a clam just before one of the Cliff Hangers. He is eventually rescued, of course, and that night Aunt Harriet cooks clam chowder, which Batman suggests could count as a manner of revenge.
