the war on christmas, like many traditions (passion plays) dates back at least a hundred years and was invented by people like Charles Coughlin in order to stir up antisemitic rhetoric. The real culprit in our midsts right now is John Gibson who has done the most to sensationalize this non-issue and has recently even been quoted as saying that all religions other than protestant christianity are wrong.
So here's the deal, happy holidays is a contraction since there are at least 15 holidays in december, many of which don't have much religious importance and many of which do (anyone who's ever gone through Jewish confirmation like i have can tell you Channuka is completely insignificant and was basically made up to compensate for a late Sukhot).
My problem is with the fact that Christmas is the only religious holiday to be a federal holiday. And please don't give me that Christian nation bullshit cause America was founded by deist freemasons and the puritans banned christmas and all other holidays. it's only been a federal holiday for 110 years and i think that constitutes a violation of the first amendment. the majority of the country may be christian but why should that compromise the constitution?

Both proponents of one side of the aisle or the other are falling into a trap with this "loss of liberties" argument. It isn't the left that's taking away freedoms, and it isn't the right. It's the government in general.
