Thats not really how I saw it. As it seemed to me, Thanos got sequentially beaten up by a series of characters including a tree, The Thing, The Vision and Captain America's Shield without putting up any sort of offense and during which his face was frozen in the following expression:
At the end he made some vague threat and in response the assembled heroes all but laughed in his face.
Its not that terrible all things considered but its hardly in keeping with the sort of rep the character has commonly had on battleboards.

He was down briefly, but not out. Tanking shots from Thor(Mjolnir), Hulk, Rulk, Thing, Groot, Vision, and prolly other off-panel shennanigans and still not getting KO'ed is pretty damned impressive. The Avengers calling in the Elders shows that they don't have the power to beat him.

They didnt call in The Elders to beat Thanos - The Elders came to collect him after The Avengers had defeated him.

Their help was giving them the stuff they needed to build the gun. They didn't participate in his beating once the cube was out...

The deal was that the Elders helped them defeat Thanos with the (fake) Cosmic Cube. As seen by the Collector giving them that thing that Thor shot Thanos with. Once he had lost the Cube and was ordinary old Thanos again they straight beat him up and then handed him over to The Elders as arranged.
Lol. It was pretty clear what the deal was, that the Elders would provide them with the necessary tools to beat Thanos' cube. The Avengers had Thanos already beat by the time the Elders came.
All of this is pretty obvious shit. Thanos was in it deep, if the look on his face and the fact that he was pummeled repeatedly without any defense until a tooth was knocked loose made the intent clear.
