It probably is the reality, and as a business Marvel probably is smart for making that decision, but it sort of confirms all the stuff I've thought about why comics suck: they are written for the broadest and basest appeal with no intention of being meaningful "months and years" in the future...
Hell, the idea that fans wont stay with a character is a self-fulfilling prophecy... Maybe a broader acceptance of comics in the public will get the creators to care about long-term brand loyalty, but that attitude seems so toxic. I wouldn't let that author within 50 feet of a Spider-Man book.
Yeah, that's just depressing.
