Unfortunately it also sort of highlighted the problem - by requiring such a massive, deliberate, and concerted effort by the writer to get Pym even in the ballpark of what Stark, Reed etc seem to casually do.I'm thinking that a Pym/Aquaman team-up is seriously needed.
Don't get me wrong - I don't hate Pym and I never wanted to dislike him, I just always thought he seemed like a loser right from the beginning. I enjoyed his run in Mighty Avengers and it was good to see him get some effective panel time as a lead character.
I don't think that's really true.
Under Lee/Kirby, Pym was always treated as a peer to Stark and Richards. Granted, Stark and Richards certainly had the benefit of being focused on a lot more on their respective teams as well as Stark having his own series, but Pym was hardly ever shown to be vastly inferior to either.
If any thing, the whole "Pym struck Janet and is a mess mentally" was more of a concentrated effort by the writer than Pym's run with Mighty Avengers and push since then. And writers made it a point to constantly point out Pym hitting Janet and making Ultron and his mental issues when guys like Reed have berated their significant other more often and haven't been mentally ill during it.
I guess Slott and Gage trying to make Pym relevant and move him as a character beyond the very old tropes of slapping his wife and making a genocidal robot was deliberate and "forced", but really, considering he had been MIA since before Secret Invasion, it works.
