Why did he do it in the first place? The idea of using the moon to block sun seems kinda retarded (if that was the reason).

The sun weakens him, which is the opposite of what it does to Superman. We saw the same basic thing when he snorted a chunk of Kryptonite like it was a crack-rock.

Apparently he's trying to cause a perpetual eclipse to cause him from weakening, and also gathering the world's supply of Kryptonite to fuel him.
