It gets overused a lot because it's in the public domain. For example, I'm really into board games these days. And everything has a Lovecraft expansion, or re-skin, or whatever. There are even Lovecraft expansions that poke fun at this fact. One is called "The Obligatory Cthulhu Expansion."
I've played a couple that really utilize the theme, setting, and mythos in a way that tangibly adds to the experience. So that's awesome. And many others where it feels tacked on. So I don't love the lore by default, but I agree that it's an excellent mythos in the right hands.
