He did the same kind of snively shit when he was beaten at the end of FE--that's just how Johns wanted to portray his character, I guess.
Still though, at least he only died at the hands of an abstract-level being, after he had already swatted an amped Superman away like a fly. Moreover, his punches actually appeared to HURT that same abstract-level being. Those are gargantuan feats, tbh.
So as far as that side of things goes, he definitely went out on top.
